Mr Chrys Dimitriou, Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon, is the Lead Clinician for Cataract and Glaucoma at the Ramsay OAKS Hospital in Colchester, as well as East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust (ESNEFT). He is the Glaucoma Lead for ESNEFT, and the Educational Lead and Regional Ophthalmology Simulation Lead for the East Anglia Deanery.
Dr Dimitriou is a specialist in modern cataract surgery and glaucoma therapy, as well as all general eye conditions. He has performed in excess of 15,000 Cataract Operations and more than 5,000 MIGS procedures (minimally invasive glaucoma surgery) and is widely recognised as one of the eye surgeons with the highest number of successful MIGS procedures worldwide. Dr Dimitriou has performed the first MINIject and MiNT in the UK, and has the largest MINIject series in the UK to date published in peer reviewed journals. He has also introduced GONIOREADY for MIGS, performing the first UK cases in 2023.
In 2025, Dr Dimitriou was awarded the Level 1 National Clinical Excellence (Clinical Impact) Award (NCIA) by the Department of Health and Social Care, the highest national Government honour that any Ophthalmologist has ever achieved in the Trust. In 2024, he was presented with the European Award in Medicine (EAM) in the category of Ophthalmology at Budapest Gundel Palace, and in 2023, Dr Dimitriou received the Rob Brierly Educational Award as the Top Medical Trainer for the Trust.
Dr Dimitriou serves as Principal Investigator for major Glaucoma Research Studies such as the National East Anglian POEM Study, XPLORE International XEN45 in Angle Closure Multi-Centre Study, Pan-European MASTERS CyPass Study, TRITON, ARTEMIS, and ATHENA Studies. He is also the Country Chief Investigator for the STAR VII Study for MINIject. He serves as Honorary Member of the Board of Directors of the ICENI Surgical Simulation Centre in Colchester and leads the Faculty of Ophthalmology. He is the founder, organiser and chair of the annual iGLEAMS MIGS in 3D and the GLAUCOMBURY Festival.
Dr Dimitriou completed comprehensive training at The Royal United Hospital in Bath, The Prince Charles Eye Unit in Windsor and The Royal Surrey County Hospital (RSCH) in Guildford (2007-2012). He received further sub-specialty training at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and the world-renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital in London (2012-2015). He has also completed a full-year fellowship in MIGS at RSCH (2016-2017) with MIGS master, Dan Lindfield.
